Comme il est dit du vicaire, le vicariant tient — géographiquement — la place d’un autre. Plus exactement, il s’agit d’une espèce animale occupant la niche écologique dans laquelle, ailleurs, une autre espèce, voisine, parfois presque quasiment identique, est installée. Des exemples nombreux peuvent être proposés, tels ceux des cervidés d’Amérique du Nord et d’Eurasie. Ce sont des cas de spéciation relatifs à l’isolement biologique dont certaines populations animales ont été, au cours des temps géologiques, affectés.

L’interprétation de la diversification, ainsi réalisée au cours de la phylogenèse dans un complexe de formes apparentées, est une préoccupation majeure des systématiciens, notamment cladistes.

En physiopathologie humaine sont dits vicariants des organes dont l’entrée en action, en situation de déficit biologique, permet de compenser un risque d’insuffisance fonctionnelle.
